Fire Prevention

The Lewes Volunteer Fire Department is dedicated to the teaching of fire prevention in the community of Lewes. The members of the committee work year round to insure the safety of all those that live in their district. The members of the fire department also encourage all visitors to the area to stop by the firehouse for a tour and to pick up pamphlets on fire prevention.

The members of the Fire Prevention committee consider fire prevention a year long ongoing event. During the year the committee goes out into the community holding fire prevention and safety displays at Daycare centers, Home Depot, Lowe?s and other local community events in the city including Lewes Night Out.

Fire Prevention week falls on the anniversary of the great Chicago fire, October 8th. Every year in early October Fire Prevention is emphasized to the local school children. The children in grades K-3 are given a first hand look at the fire trucks and equipment at Station 1. The kids are shown how to STOP, DROP and ROLL by a firefighter, how and when to call 911, they watch a short video on fire safety by Stretch the ladder truck, and observe a firefighter dressing in his turn out gear to show the children that they do not need to fear firefighters. The children are encouraged to ask questions and participate in the demonstrations. At the end of their tour the children get to go outside and spray a fire hose at a mock burning house. Each child is then given a ?goodie bag? with coloring books, crayons and other fun material to help reinforce fire prevention safety. The highlight of their day is a ride back to the school on the trucks.

At the end of fire prevention week the children, grades K-5th are invited to enter the Fire Prevention Poster and Essay contest. The winners are given plaques and stuffed fire fighter Dalmatians. The local first place winners Essays and Poster are then sent on to the County level for judging.

Any one interested in fire prevention material or scheduling a tour of the fire house may contact the fire house at 302-645-6556.
