The Lewes Fire Department hosted an open water rescue class that ran over the course of 4 classroom nights 1 day and 1 night on the water. The 21 students from Lewes and Slaughter Beach Fire Departments learned in water rescue procedures, knots, chart reading, navigation, search patterns, and towing operations. Students rotated through evolutions as rescuer and individuals in distress. The multi-department traing further improved the existing working relationship between departments. Lewes and Slaughter Beach are regularly dispatched simultaneously on water rescues due to their nature. Students also had the opportunity to operate the boats and its navigational systems in various circumstances.
