Lewes Fire Department Building New Station 2 In Nassau

The Lewes Fire Department Inc. announces the construction of a new Station 2 in Nassau. Construction is scheduled to start the beginning of October 2013 with an estimated cost of 2.9 million dollars. Demolition of the existing station will allow for the construction of a larger and more advanced station on the same site. The current building was a pre-fabricated building erected in 1989 to reduce response time to our rural fire district. The building was projected to serve the community for 20 years; it has now served the community for nearly 25 years.

The department conducted a long range plan several years ago for the purpose of projecting future growth in our district. This study included, but was not limited to, location of new stations, upgrades on existing stations, additional apparatus and response times to emergencies. This information was utilized in the location and design of the new building.

The new project will allow for future growth in our EMS staff as medical calls are projected to exceed 3500 medical emergencies this year with the numbers increasing each year. Projected fire and accident calls are expected to be over 600 this year. We feel this best serves our continuously growing year round community and its visitors.

The new structure will be two stories; the first floor will have six engine bays, several bunk rooms to house up to 20 volunteers and career staff during extended emergencies such as hurricanes and snow storms which our current structure does not have. A partial basement was added for storage and future growth. The second floor will have a large room for meetings, kitchen amenities and additional office space.

Construction is projected to be complete by October 2014.  There will be no disruption in emergency services to the community while construction is underway.  A temporary structure will be utilized adjacent to the site. Inquiries should be directed to Dale Magee President or Glenn Marshall Vice President Lewes Fire Department Inc. at 302-645-6556.
